Grammar

HSK1 essentials

Mandarin doesn't conjugate verbs, doesn't have grammatical gender, and doesn't pluralise nouns. Most of "grammar" at this level is word order and a handful of particles.

1. Subject — Verb — Object

Same as English. Verbs do not change form.

我 喝 茶。
wǒhēchá
— I drink tea.

2. 是 — to be (only for "A is B")

Use 是 (shì) to link two nouns: A is (a) B. Don't use it before adjectives — adjectives are verbs in Chinese.

我 是 学生。
wǒshìxuéshēng
— I am a student.
他 是 我 的 朋友。
tāshìwǒdepéngyǒu
— He is my friend.
✗ 我 是 高兴。
— (WRONG — never put 是 before an adjective.)
我 很 高兴。
wǒhěngāoxìng
— I'm happy. (literally: I very happy)

3. 有 — to have / there is

Possession or existence. Negate with 没 (méi), not with 不.

我 有 一 个 朋友。
wǒyǒuyígèpéngyǒu
— I have a friend.
我 没 有 钱。
wǒméiyǒuqián
— I don't have money.

4. Negation: 不 vs 没

我 不 喝 茶。
wǒbùhēchá
— I don't drink tea.
她 没 有 猫。
tāméiyǒumāo
— She doesn't have a cat.

5. Questions

Two main ways:

你 喝 茶 吗?
nǐhēcháma
— Do you drink tea?
你 叫 什么 名字?
nǐjiàoshénmemíngzi
— What's your name?
他 在 哪儿?
tāzàinǎr
— Where is he?

6. 的 — possessive & attributive

Goes between modifier and noun. Like English 's or of. Often dropped for close relations (family, friends).

我 的 书
wǒdeshū
— my book
老师 的 名字
lǎoshīdemíngzi
— the teacher's name
我 妈妈
wǒmāma
— my mother (drop 的 for family)

7. Measure words

You can't say "two book" — you need a measure word: number — measure word — noun. 个 (gè) is the catch-all default. 本 for books, 块 for pieces / yuán, 岁 for years of age.

三 个 朋友
sāngèpéngyǒu
— three friends
两 本 书
liǎngběnshū
— two books
她 五 岁。
tāwǔsuì
— She is five years old.

8. 了 — completion & change

After a verb: action completed. At the end of a sentence: a new situation / change of state. (At HSK1, just learn to recognize it.)

我 吃 了 米饭。
wǒchīlemǐfàn
— I ate rice.
下雨 了。
xiàyǔle
— It's started raining.

9. 在 — location & ongoing action

Two uses:

我 在 家。
wǒzàijiā
— I'm at home.
他 在 看 电视。
tāzàikàndiànshì
— He is watching TV.

10. 能 vs 会

我 会 说 汉语。
wǒhuìshuōhànyǔ
— I can speak Chinese.
你 能 来 吗?
nǐnéngláima
— Can you come?

11. Time expressions go before the verb

Either at the start of the sentence, or right after the subject. Never at the end like in English.

我 明天 去 北京。
wǒmíngtiānqùběijīng
— I'm going to Beijing tomorrow.
明天 我 去 北京。
míngtiānwǒqùběijīng
— Same, with the time topicalized.
✗ 我 去 北京 明天。
— (WRONG — time can't go at the end.)
